I’ll preface this by stating that I’m not often a superstitious person.
The story behind the cute lil’ dog I’ve been very obviously obsessed with is simple: he was a stray. My friends found him on York St and took him in. His owners, a family with two small children who the puppy was very happy to see, picked him up on Friday afternoon. We only knew him for a couple days. But damn, how could you not love that lil’ guy?
Last week, when the Arizona Diamondbacks hit 3 home runs off of Matt Cain in one inning, I decided to give up on the game and go meet the puppy. I jokingly tweeted out photos of him as a #rallypup, a spirit animal intended to help push the luck to the Giants. Scrappy, and in dramatic fashion as always, the Giants came back to win the game.
So the next day, when the Giants were down again, I tweeted a different photo of the puppy, with the same joke and intent. They won.
And they won again. And again. And again. And again.
It’s now become a “thing,” this little #rallypup, no longer even in our possession. My internet friends have clung onto this face as a symbol of athletic prosperity. Could it be that some photos of a stray dog are motivating our batters to overcome our pitching flaws? Is it possible that this face is the solution to the extreme extra inning issue the Giants have been facing recently? Who knows? Right now it’s purely coincidence.
The Giants have swept two division rivals since the advent of #rallypup, and are now in the lead for the NL West. Take it for what it is. I must disclose again that the 200+ photos I took for the purpose of aiding superstition for another winning season are from a 4-day span. But hey, what if the Giants were to go 150-12 for the season? The magic would be absolutely undeniable.
Now, I realize I sound not only deranged but also like I have too much free time, and I’d hardly challenge those accusations. Go Giants!
